WWE is tag teaming with Netflix for an all-new project, as the streaming service will premiere a new live-action movie from WWE Studios sometime next year. Called The Main Event the family movie will be directed by Jay Karas (Parks and Recreation), based on an original screenplay by Larry Postel. All from WWE Studios, Richard Lowell is producing, with Susan Levison and Maggie Malina executive producing. Production on the project has already begun this week in Vancouver, British Columbia, suggesting the movie is already on the fast-track to premiere on Netflix in 2020.

The Main Event follows an 11-year-old boy with ambitions of becoming a professional wrestler for WWE. All he can do is dream until he finds a mysterious, magical mask which leads to him joining a competition to become a WWE Superstar. Heading the cast will be Seth Carr (Black Panther) in the lead role, joined by Tichina Arnold (The Neighborhood), Ken Marino (The Other Two), and Adam Pally (The Mindy Project). Additionally, several actual WWE Superstars will be featured in the movie as well, with confirmed names including Kofi Kingston, Mike "The Miz" Mizanin, and The Celtic Warrior, Sheamus. Expect to see many more names from the roster added to the cast as production commences.

The Netflix original's lead, Seth Carr, had a role in the 2018 blockbuster Black Panther as the young version of N'Jadaka, the character played by Michael B. Jordan. That movie introduced Carr to a vast, worldwide audience by amassing over $1.3 billion in ticket sales. Carr has been appearing in various TV series as well, including the Amazon crime drama Bosch and the comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Earlier this year, it was announced Carr had been cast in the Netflix series Free Rein, and will appear in new episodes when they premiere on the streaming service next month. The series follows a 15-year-old California girl visiting her mother's home on a UK island where she bonds with a mysterious horse, and Carr will play a young cowboy enthusiast named Aaron.

Fighting with My Family was the most recent feature to be released from WWE Studios, serving as a biographical comedy-drama about WWE Superstar Paige's journey from the indie leagues to the big stage. Florence Pugh (Outlaw King) starred alongside Lena Headey (Game of Thrones), Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead), Jack Lowden (War & Peace), and Vince Vaughn (True Detective). Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson also had a prominent role in the movie, playing himself. It grossed nearly $40 million against an $11 million budget, making it a financial success. Critical reception proved to be rather kind for the movie as well, as Fighting with My Family scored a 92% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

While movies produced by WWE Studios have been hit or miss over the years, it seems the ones actually involving wrestling with WWE superstars might be the best avenue. If The Main Event also turns out to be a success, it's likely we'll see more movies like these popping up in the future. Expect to see it when it premieres on Netflix in 2020.
