With trailers for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 having already dropped, The Marvels will be the next Marvel Cinematic Universe movie to be getting its first look. Although a first trailer is not expected to arrive for at least a couple of months, a new synopsis has revealed some more plot points of how Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) come together to take on a cosmic mission.

Previously, fans have been given brief glimpses into where The Marvels will take its three heroines, with WandaVision having ended with Monica Rambeau being approached by an associate of Nick Fury and Ms. Marvel showing Kamala Khan being switched with Carol Danvers. Now the synopsis shines a little bit of light on where all this will lead them. The synopsis made available on the Disney Press site, which was shared by CaptainMarvelNews on Twitter reads:

“Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence, but unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged neice Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team-up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as ‘The Marvels’.”

The Marvels plot
Marvel Studios

For now, there are no specific enough details known about The Marvels to say how the film will fit into the MCU’s current narrative arc, but that doesn’t mean there are not plenty of rumors and theories out there about how the film will connect to other Marvel projects. While there are obvious connections to WandaVision, Ms. Marvel and Captain Marvel, it is also expected that the upcoming Secret Invasion will have a role to play in setting up the film. The Marvels was originally expected to arrive in theaters in February 2023, but was subsequently pushed back to July 2023, seemingly when Secret Invasion was delayed from late 2022 to early 2023.

Another big theory about the movie is that the ancient bangle of Ms. Marvel is connected to the Ten Rings of Shang-Chi. With last year’s Simu Liu-led introduction to Shang-Chi having ended with the hero discussing the Ten Rings with holographic versions of Bruce Banner and Carol Danvers, it would not be too much of a stretch for this connection to actually be true, and it is certainly one of the more plausible theories out there.

The Marvels still has some way to go before revealing all of its secrets, but that doesn’t mean Marvel Studios won’t start ramping up hype for the film’s summer release as soon as possible. With both Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 already set to be big hits in 2023, The Marvels will have a lot to do to keep the momentum going when it arrives on July 28, 2023.
