The Matrix became a worldwide phenomenon and launched star Keanu Reeves further into the cultural stratosphere – but only its sequels have been shown in IMAX, with 2003’s The Matrix Reloaded being the first Warner Bros. Pictures title ever to undergo the IMAX Digital Remastering (DMR) process for its screens.

“With excitement building around The Matrix Resurrections, this is the perfect time to experience the film that started it all in a way it’s never been seen before,” said Megan Colligan, President of IMAX Entertainment. “The Matrix forever changed the visual language of epic filmmaking and we’re very excited for fans everywhere to be able to enjoy this groundbreaking film for the first time in IMAX.” The special run comes just weeks before the highly anticipated The Matrix Resurrections hits IMAX screens on December 22, bringing more of this iconic franchise to fans eager to see what’s next in this mind-bending saga.

The Matrix kicked off a truly singular film franchise that has continued to entertain audiences and influence the industry since 1999,” stated Jeff Goldstein, President, Warner Bros. Pictures Domestic Distribution. “We’re thrilled to partner with IMAX on another first for the fans who’ve waited more than 20 years to see The Matrix in this format, and for moviegoers who will discover this incredible ongoing story for the first time, just in time for The Matrix Resurrections to hit theaters for the holidays.”

The Matrix Resurrections is the latest chapter in the story of IMAX and The Matrix – Following The Matrix Reloaded, the release of The Matrix Revolutions (2003) marked the first time that a live-action Hollywood tentpole would have a theatrical release day-and-date with IMAX.
