Director Taika Waititi has revealed how the re-appearance of Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster will affect Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder in the upcoming Marvel sequel Thor: Love and Thunder. And it sounds like it will be a lot. Speaking with Empire Magazine, the filmmaker described Foster’s comeback as a “mindf---” for the former Avenger, especially considering what she’ll be wearing.

"It's been about eight years. She's had a whole other life, and then the love of your life comes back on the scene, and is now dressed like you. It's a real mindf--k for Thor."

Rather than the mild-mannered scientist, Jane Foster will emerge in Thor: Love and Thunder with her own set of superpowers as The Mighty Thor. Wielding Thor’s former weapon, Mjölnir, seeing his two exes together is sure to have a real emotional impact on the Asgardian warrior as he tries to navigate his way through a midlife crisis. Waititi revealed that the addition of The Mighty Thor was not always the plan...

"I didn't know we were going to use the storyline of the Mighty Thor character until we started working out the actual story. I was writing and it was like, 'Wouldn't it be kind of cool to bring Jane back into the storyline?'"

After deciding to bring Jane Foster back into the fold, Waititi quickly realized that she needed to be more of a major player in the adventure, and thus, The Mighty Thor will make her live-action debut.

"You don't want Natalie coming back and playing that same character who's walking around with science equipment. You know, while Thor's flying around, she's left on Earth, tapping her foot going, 'When's he going to be back?' That's boring. You want her to be part of the adventure."

Thor will be thanking his lucky stars that The Mighty Thor is on the scene in Thor: Love and Thunder, as he comes face-to-face with his greatest threat yet: Gorr the God Butcher. Played by Oscar winner and The Dark Knight star Christian Bale, Taika Waititi has called the revenge-fuelled bad guy “the best villain that Marvel’s ever had.”

Thor: Love and Thunder finds Thor on a journey unlike anything he's ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher, who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie, Korg and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster, who – to Thor's surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher's vengeance and stop him before it's too late.

Directed by Taika Waititi, and starring Chris Hemsworth as Thor, alongside Tessa Thompson, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Chris Pratt, Jaimie Alexander, Pom Klementieff, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn, Jeff Goldblum, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper, Thor: Love and Thunder is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 8, 2022, as part of Phase Four of the MCU.
