The New Mutants is still coming out. After months of no news, we have learned that a trailer is complete and that it will come out in January. Marvel fans were beginning to think that the long-awaited movie was never going to see the light of day after the Disney and Fox deal closed earlier this year. While this is great news, we still don't know when the movie will be coming out or if it will be in theaters or strictly on Disney+.
The New Mutants illustrator Bill Sienkiewicz is the one behind the news. He appeared on the Fatman Beyond podcast with Kevin Smith and revealed that he as actually seen the latest The New Mutants trailer. Fans have been waiting over two years to see the movie, so this is bound to be great news for anyone who has been waiting for so long. Sienkiewicz had this to say about New Mutants.
"I don't know if I'm even allowed to mention any of this, but I will say that The New Mutants film, if you've heard anything about it the last couple years... two days ago, I heard from Josh Boone, the director. And he sent me a new trailer. They've been working on it, and it is phenomenal. I got chills. It looks like, because of the whole Disney-Fox merger, takeover, whatever... it's got the blessings of Marvel. And it feels more Marvel in terms of what they're doing, but also the horror elements of the film are in place."
The horror elements were something Marvel fans were worried about losing when Disney took over. However, it appears those elements are still very much in place. As for the January trailer release, director Josh Boone responded on Twitter to a fan stating it would arrive next month. A specific date was not mentioned, but December is nearly over, so we don't have too much longer to wait at this point.
Josh Boone wanted The New Mutants to be a lot darker than the previous X-Men movies. It is expected to be the final 20th Century Fox movie released under the Disney umbrella. From here on out, everything will be tied to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is exciting and a bit of a bummer for Marvel fans who were into the Fox movies. Regardless, a new era is upon us and it's going to be very interesting to see how everything pans out.
The New Mutants was originally supposed to hit theaters in April 2018, but it was pushed back to February 2019 and then pushed back again to August 2019. All of those release dates have come and gone and now April 2020 is supposed to be when the movie actually hits theaters or Disney+. We have yet to get a confirmation, but if a new trailer is complete, we should be getting some news in the near future.
