Filming on the upcoming sequel The Nun 2 is officially underway. Taking to Instagram, producer James Wan posted an image from the set revealing our first look at the film. The clapboard in the photo also reveals the logo for The Nun 2. In the caption, Wan notes that filming has begun.
"Photography has commenced on THE NUN 2 in France! With Michael Chaves performing the exorcism (directing) on this one," Wan says.
Wan also tagged some of the stars of the film, such as Bonnie Aarons, who returns to reprise her role as the titular antagonist. The film also brings back Taissa Farmiga from The Nun while Storm Reid debuts as the lead character. Jonas Bloquet, who played Frenchie in the first film, is also tagged.
"I light a candle every day. I would love to jump back in that habit," Aarons said in 2021, via ComingSoon, before officially signing on for the sequel, teasing a quality follow-up that was to come courtesy of New Line and Warner Bros. "I love that film and that character and that whole crew. I light a candle every day. I have to see what they wrote, you know, I hope it explores more of the depth of the demon. I think the demon came from the bowels of hell."
She added, "We'll see whatever it is. It's Warner Brothers. It's going to be phenomenal. It's New Line Cinema. Whatever they do is going to be phenomenal. They really know how to make a film over there."
The Nun Was a Big Hit
Released in 2018, The Nun was directed by Corin Hardy and written by Gary Dauberman. It serves as a spinoff to The Conjuring 2 which first introduced Bonnie aarons as Valak. The movie, starring Taissa Farmiga, Demian Bichir, and Jonas Bloquet, is set in early 1950s Romania as a Roman Catholic priest and a nun encounter Valak, uncovering dark secrets in the process.
With a fairly modest budget of $22 million, The Nun was a big hit at the box office for Warner Bros. It pulled in more than $365 million worldwide, making the film incredibly successful as one of the highest-grossing films of the Conjuring series. Even with harsh reviews, the profits to be made with a sequel were apparent to the studio and it wasn't a surprise when The Nun 2 was announced.
The Nun 2 will be released on Sept. 8, 2023.
