According to The Hollywood Reporter, this Easter weekend, The Passion of the Christ rebounded at the boxoffice -- far beyond anyone's expectations. On its seventh weekend, the Mel Gibson-helmed drama from distributor Newmarket Films rose from the fifth slot a week earlier to reign in the top spot once again, taking in an estimated $17.1 million.

The gross for "Passion" was up a sensational 61% from a week earlier, despite being in 168 fewer theaters. Meanwhile, Buena Vista's pricey The Alamo went down to ignominious defeat with a boxoffice debut of less than $10 million. During a crowded weekend that saw five new wide releases enter the fray, Fox Searchlight's Johnson Family Vacation took the industry by surprise and was the lone new standout at the boxoffice, while the rest of the pack landed with a resounding thud for the most part.

Holdovers fared no better as every film in the top 10, except for "Passion," dropped by more than 40% from a week earlier. Altogether, 13 wide releases have entered the market in the past three weeks.
