Universal Pictures has handed out a June 20, 2014 release date for their upcoming horror sequel The Purge 2, exactly two weeks after writer-director James DeMonaco signed on to return. As of now, the follow-up is slated to face the musical Jersey Boys and the comedy sequel Think Like a Man Too.

Our story from earlier this month revealed that the sequel would receive $2.25 million in tax credits if production were to begin by the end of 2013. While it seemed unlikely at the time, if they hope to hit this release date which is exactly seven months away from today, shooting will have to begin rather quickly. No cast members from The Purge have been confirmed to return yet, but don't be surprised to hear casting announcements in the very near future.

Jason Blum is returning to produce through his Blumhouse Productions alongside Sebastian K. Lermercier and Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Bradley Fuller and Andrew Form.

The original thriller starred Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey as upper-class parents whose high-tech security system is breached during The Purge, the one night a year where all crime is legal. Produced on just a $3 million budget, The Purge earned just under $90 million in its theatrical run.
