Back in September, we reported Screen Gems may remake The Raid, after its explosive debut at the Toronto Film Festival. Today it has been confirmed that an English-language remake of The Raid is happening.

Gareth Evans, who wrote and directed The Raid, is executive producing the remake, although he will not return to write or direct. Our report from September revealed Gareth Evans plans to shoot a sequel to The Raid in February.

XYZ Films will produce the remake alongside Screen Gems. The Raid centers on a SWAT team who are trapped in an apartment building by a nefarious drug lord. The cops must fight they're way through the drug lord's heavily-armed, martial-arts-trained soldiers to get out of the building alive. The Raid won the Midnight Madness audience award at the Toronto Film Festival, where Sony Pictures secured worldwide rights to the action movie.

It isn't clear when Sony plans on releasing The Raid in theaters. No production schedule was given for The Raid remake.
