Sony Pictures has purchased U.S. rights for the sequel to the Indonesian action movie, The Raid tentatively titled Berandal. The original had its U.S. premiere at the Sundance film festival and took home the Midnight Madness Award.

The Raid follows an elite SWAT team tasked with raiding an impenetrable safe house deep in the heart of Jakarta's slums. As the mission quickly falls apart, the squad finds themselves stranded in the building and left with no choice but to complete the mission by fighting their way out.

No details have been released on the sequel's plot, but we know that Iko Uwais will be coming back to star with Gareth Evans set to direct.

Sony Pictures Classics is releasing The Raid in the United States on March 23rd while the sequel will start production late 2012 in Jakarta.
