Robert Pattinson's Bruce Wayne nearly gets wiped out in a new clip from The Batman. Officially, the long-awaited superhero film will make its debut on the big screen in March, and for the fans who've been eagerly awaiting this release, that date cannot come soon enough. To help hold some of you over until that movie arrives in its entirety, you can check out a brand new clip from The Batman below. As this is a two-and-a-half-minute scene that comes directly from the film, be warned that the footage contains SPOILERS.
In the clip, Bruce Wayne can be seen at a crowded funeral when loud noises interrupt the proceedings. Moments later, a car obviously sent by the Riddler crashes its way through the building, coming just feet away from flattening Mr. Wayne himself. Wayne takes notice of a silhouette from above of a man watching the carnage, and the implication is this must be our Riddler getting himself a great view of the action.
When the car finally stops, the Gotham Police Department officers order the driver to exit. We can see the arms of someone slowly peeking out as the person inside begins to exit the vehicle, but the clip cuts off just before we see their identity. Perhaps this will be a significant plot point in the film itself, but we will have to wait for the full movie to see what exactly the Riddler is up to in this situation.
The Riddler's Face Has Not Been Shown in Any Promotional Materials
The Riddler has not traditionally been depicted in DC stories as someone quite as murderous as he appears to be in The Batman. This version, played by Paul Dano, looks to be inspired by the Zodiac Killer, from his mysterious appearance to the bizarre puzzles he intentionally leaves behind at crime scenes. Perhaps in the vein of similarly keeping the Riddler's identity private, Dano's face hasn't been shown in any sneak peeks or trailers. Dano has also suggested that he's put so much more into the role than simply basing him on an infamous serial killer.
“I liked how both grounded and big this film is at the same time," the actor told Empire. "So there are some grounding forces like the Zodiac Killer, right? But it’s still The Batman, and for me it’s much bigger, so it was important to let my imagination react to the script, rather than strictly basing it on a serial killer.”
Matt Reeves directs The Batman using a screenplay co-written with Peter Craig. The film stars Robert Pattinson (Bruce Wayne/Batman), Paul Dano (The Riddler), Zoe Kravitz (Selina Kyle/Catwoman), Jeffrey Wright (James Gordon), John Turturro (Carmine Falcone), Andy Serkis (Alfred Pennyworth), and Colin Farrell (Oswald Cobblepot). Sequels to The Batman seem inevitable, and while none are officially greenlit yet, there are plans to develop at least two spinoff shows at HBO Max. One fill follow the GPD while the other follows Farrell's Oz as he becomes the Penguin.
After a lengthy production process, fans can finally check out The Batman when the movie premieres in theaters on March 4, 2022.
