Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy seemed to have incorporated everything that anyone could want into its epic runtime, especially in the expanded Extended Cut. However, one controversial character was missing from all versions of the movie, but that may not be the case when it comes to Prime Video’s The Rings of Power as new rumors have suggested that Tom Bombadil will make an appearance in the second season of the series.Naturally there are many rumors currently whirling around the next season of Prime Video’s Middle Earth story, but this one would be a pretty big arrival considering the character’s omission from Jackson’s movies. TheOneRing.net reported that during their recent broadcasts on YouTube, one of their frequent sources revealed that dialogue overheard during the shooting of Rings of Power’s new season included one character being called “Tom” by name. While there have been a lot of codenames being used in written documents for the show to keep character identities secret, the spoken dialogue on set obviously has to use the real character names. While there could be other possible characters included in the show under the name of Tom, the new rumor lines up with previous suggestions that the character of Tom Bombadil will appear in Rings of Power, even if it could be just a short cameo. It was recently suggested the same rumor had been heard from other production sources, leading to speculation that the character with the codename of “Errol Pram” was Tom Bombadil.

According to Amazon Studios head Vernon Sanders, The Rings of Power is only just getting started and despite the huge wave of backlash season one received, there are seemingly no plans to ditch the series just yet. In a previous interview, Sanders doubled down on the position of the show in the Prime Video schedule, revealing that even before the second season has completed filming, season three’s renewal is almost good to go.

“We are absolutely committed, we have every reason to be excited. They’ve done a tremendous job. It’s a great question about Season 3, we’re probably two to three months in on Season 3, but I think there could be news certainly in the new year. There’s so much planning and prep that’s necessary for us to get this mounted that the only reason we probably haven’t gotten there quite yet is we’ve just been so heads down in Season 2, but I would expect there to be news in the new year.”

The divisive nature of The Rings of Power has actually ensured huge audience numbers for the series thanks to plenty tuning in just to corroborate or dispel the many sub-1-star reviews that piled into Rotten Tomatoes audience scores during the show’s first season. Now it seems that there are going to be plenty more arguments about Tolkien canon to come with the multi-year commitment to the series.

The Rings of Power’s first season is currently streaming on Prime Video.
