Kevin Smith has a secret role in The Rise of Skywalker. Smith is a massive fan of the Star Wars universe, so this was a big deal. This isn't the first time that J.J. Abrams included him in the latest sequel trilogy. Smith was able to voice a Stormtrooper in 2015's The Force Awakens and Abrams wanted him to be a part of the final movie in the trilogy after he suffered his heart attack. There's no way that Kevin Smith was going to turn down a chance to be in a Star Wars movie.
On The Rise of Skywalker release date, Kevin Smith revealed his role. He posted, "Happy The Rise of Skywalker Day! I'm rocking my Bose Sith Trooper headphones and watching myself in a Star Wars movie (dead center, about to be passed by Poe)!" As it turns out, Smith was a droid on the icy planet of Kijimi and can briefly be seen as Oscar Isaac's Poe sneaks by him. Smith went into further detail about how it all came together in a separate post. He explains.
"Congrats to J.J. Abrams on the #1 opening and for closing out the Star Wars saga - and thank you for letting me be in the series of flicks that I fell in love with 42 years ago! Back when I had my heart attack, J.J. sent me an email that said, 'Live through this and I'll put you in Episode 9!'"
Avengers: Endgame and J.J. Abrams might have been the extra strength Kevin Smith needed to fight back after his health scare. Smith has talked about the importance of the MCU and the Star Wars franchise in his life a lot over the years, so it's great to see him be able to take part in these fun projects that mean so much to him. "When they went into production last year on The Rise of Skywalker, I wrote J.J. and asked 'So... I'm alive. That offer still good?' He confirmed and I flew out to England to visit Pinewood Studios for a few days, during which time I giddily watched J.J. do his thing until I was called into action! Ducking Stormtroopers on Kijimi, Poe passes a cyborg walking beside a bundled-up local.
That local is me! J.J. had me voice a Stormtrooper in The Force Awakens and then put me in Rise - two things a young Emo Kev never could've imagined happening while he fanned the flames of his fandom in the 70's and 80's! Thank you, my friend in the Force, for even making the offer in the first place, let alone following through on it! You gave me a rare sensation I haven't had since I was an action figure collecting kid in 1983 when you let me come over to your house to play Star Wars with you!"
If all of this isn't enough, Kevin Smith attended The Rise of Skywalker premiere and was given a coin from The Mandalorian by Jon Favreau. There has to be some room for Smith to get involved in the hit Disney+ series for season 2, so let's hope Favreau makes it happen, though there's more than likely a lot of people who would kill to be on the show at this point in time. Regardless, Smith is definitely enjoying his time getting to play Star Wars for real.
The Rise of Skywalker hit theaters last week and easily dominated the box office, even though it was the lowest opening in the sequel trilogy. The Skywalker Saga has officially come to a close on the big screen, but the rest of the story will live on in comic books, video games, novels. And other media for the years to come. There's still a lot of explaining to do. You can check out the image of the cameo below, thanks to Kevin Smith's Twitter account.
