Mark Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson have signed on to produce The Roman.

The film will follow Julius Caesar's rise from a young general in the Roman army to the dictator of the area. It will depict a time in the ruler's life when he fell victim to a kidnapping by Cilician pirates and was enslaved on their prison island. Caesar finds a way to escape with his crew and crucifies the perpetrators that took him for ransom. After returning to Rome, he thrusts himself into the political spectrum and accelerates his rise to power. The project's tone is described as being in the same vein as Batman Begins.

A director has not been announced, but Travis Baker and Richard Tanne have already written the script. Mark Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson are currently preparing for their remake of The Gambler, which the 2 Guns star will be headlining. Rupert Wyatt will be directing that project.

No further casting or production details have been revealed at this point.
