The Sentinel Mark X has finally been revealed as part of the X-Men: Days of Future Past magazine cover series launched yesterday by Empire Magazine and 20th Century Fox. These are the 'future Sentinels' that are capable of wiping out the entire mutant race, and putting an end to the X-Men forever. They also serve as the catalyst for why Wolverine is sent back in time in this anticipated franchise sequel.

After seeing the photo for the first time, many questioned the engineering of the robot, and some complained that it looked too much like GORT in The Day the Earth Stood Still. We have the photo of this Mark X Sentinel singled out from the other 25 covers, as production designer John Myhre explains some of the history and detail that went into creating this massive weapon of destruction, and how it will function on screen.

"They're biomechanical weapons. We had to come up with what would be the ultimate version that could actually, in principle, stop the X-Men. We started with this idea that they were almost made up of magnetic plates slapped over one another, imagining that the plates could contract or grow, so the Sentinel can be skinny to get through a small space or the plates can open up to become a bigger shape. So they have become virtually unstoppable."

The Sentinel are created by Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage) as a way to eliminate the mutant race and restore order to humanity. Bolivar may actually have a change of heart after witnessing the destruction these massive mechanical beings bring to the countryside. But not before the initial damage is done. X-Men: Days of Future Past will be the first time these evil robots have seen action on the big screen.
