Sony Pictures Home Entertainment announced today that the year's best reviewed and most talked about film, The Social Network, debuted at # 1 making it the top selling Blu-ray and DVD and the top home rental for the week ending January 16th, according to reports from Home Media Magazine. The collector's edition 2-disc Blu-ray and 2-disc DVD were released in stores on January 11th.

The film explores the moment at which Facebook, the most revolutionary social phenomenon of the new century, was invented and how its overnight success and wealth changed the lives of the classmates who created it. Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly describes the film as, "The best picture of the year. It stands as vital proof - to the world and to Hollywood - that a brashly original movie can still connect powerfully with a popular audience. It's the first Hollywood movie to really capture the metaphysical spirit of the digital age. The popularity of The Social Network and the wry, exhilarating relevance of it are two branches growing out of the same tree. It touches a chord of timely passion." Peter Travers of Rolling Stone calls it, "A generation-defining, era-defining American landmark."

The Social Network has become a cultural touchstone, recently winning four Golden Globe Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Score; and four Critics' Choice Movie Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Score. The film also garnered Best Picture awards from a vast majority of critics groups including the National Society of Film Critics, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, the New York Film Critics Circle and the National Board of Review.
