The Facebook movie that defines a generation could not be stopped on the home video charts with The Social Network topping the DVD sales, DVD rentals and Blu-ray sales charts, during the week ending January 16. It was the first time since Toy Story 3's release in November that a title swept all three charts in one week.
The Social Network knocked last week's top seller, Despicable Me, down to second place on the DVD sales charts this week. Another new release, Lionsgate's animated tale Alpha and Omega debuted in third place in DVD sales. Piranha 3D also debuted to solid numbers, finishing sixth place in DVD sales and fifth place in rentals.
Because The Social Network wasn't delayed 28 days on both Netflix and Redbox, it was able to pull off the first sweep in two months. Piranha 3D's rental release was day-and-date with the retail version as well.
On the BD charts, The Social Network bested the high-def heavyweight Inception, which took second place. Inception is still selling strong in 1080p after more than a month on the shelves. The Social Network sold an impressive 45% of all its units in the BD format.
