It's been a long time coming, but it looks like we're finally getting a blu-ray release of the mini-series adaptation of Stephen King's The Stand! Release is slated for September 24, 2019.

The announcement is surprising seeing how just in April, director Mick Garris told Dead Entertainment that there was "zero percent chance" a blu-ray release of The Stand would ever happen, citing that since the mini-series was shot on 16mm film it would very expensive for the studio to go back to the original negative and create an HD version of the show. Fortunately, it looks like with excitement building around the upcoming reboot of The Stand, it's a no-brainer to capitalize on the success of one of Stephen King's best-selling books and give this mid-90s adaptation a proper release.

Needless to say, horror fans, Stephen King fans, Mick Garris fans...rejoice! The Stand is finally getting its due. Not much is known about the release currently except that the series has been "brilliantly restored" into a new collector's edition blu-ray. No special features have been announced, but let's hope CBS takes their time and gives this collector's edition something special to fans who have been slumming it with DVD copies of The Stand, patiently waiting years for a high-def transfer.

Mick Garris and Stephen King recently talked about the 25 year anniversary of The Stand on Mick's podcast, Post Mortem. Head on over to take a listen to some fantastic production tales from two masters of horror.

The Stand is a post-apocalyptic horror/fantasy novel by American author Stephen King. It expands upon the scenario of his earlier short story "Night Surf" and presents a detailed vision of the total breakdown of society after the accidental release of a strain of influenza that had been modified for biological warfare causes an apocalyptic pandemic, killing off over 99% of the world's population.
