The final trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie has arrived. With the movie set to hit theaters in April, this has been a long time coming for Nintendo fans. Mario and pals haven't been on the big screen since the live-action Super Mario Bros. movie hit theaters back in 1993. Great efforts have been put forth with this new animated adaptation to create a film that's much more reminiscent of the source material, and you can see a lot of that on display in the final trailer, which is filled with Mario Kart references. You can watch the trailer below.

The new trailer showcases more of the Mario Kart-style racing in action after revealing snippets of the race in the previous trailers. Throwing turtle shells and other weapons are a big part of the video games, and that has been brought into the animated movie in a big way by even wiping out Mario. The Rainbow Road itself has also long been an iconic track in the Mario Kart video game series, appearing in the very first game that was released on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992. Typically a very difficult track, given how easy it is for players to be knocked off the sides, Rainbow Road is traditionally featured as the final race in the Mario Kart games.

The movie is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (Teen Titans Go!, Teen Titans Go! To the Movies). It is written by Matthew Fogel (Minions: The Rise of Gru, The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part). Also featured is an all-star voice cast that includes Chris Pratt (Jurassic World) as Mario, Charlie Day (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia) as Luigi, Jack Black (The Cable Guy) as Bowser, Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen's Gambit) as Princess Peach, Keegan-Michael Key (The Lion King) as Toad, Seth Rogen (Neighbors) as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen (Portlandia) as Cranky Kong, and Kevin Michael Richardson (American Dad!) as Kamek.

There's a lot of good signs and increased hype heading into this release, though it remains to be seen just how well it will land with viewers and at the box office. It comes at a time when video game adaptations are on the rise after the success of films like Sonic the Hedgehog and Detective Pikachu in recent years. The Last of Us finding great success on HBO as well is another sign of just how much things have changed when it comes to the general public embracing video game adaptations.

The official synopsis for the film is as follows:

While working underground to fix a water main, Brooklyn plumbers Mario and brother Luigi are transported down a mysterious pipe and wander into a magical new world. But when the brothers are separated, Mario embarks on an epic quest to find Luigi. With the assistance of a Mushroom Kingdom resident Toad and some training from the strong-willed ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, Princess Peach, Mario taps into his own power.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be released in theaters on April 5, 2023.
