Several new images from the upcoming HBO adaptation of the time-travel love story The Time Traveler’s Wife give us another look at dual leads Rose Leslie as Clare Abshire and Theo James as Henry DeTamble, alongside some of the supporting cast. The series is based on the novel of the same name by Audrey Niffenegger, and is due to debut on HBO later this year.

These images were released via a press release from HBO, who also unveiled a few more details about their take on The Time Traveler’s Wife. “Adapted by Steven Moffat from the beloved novel of the same name, The Time Traveler’s Wife follows the intricate and magical love story between Clare (Rose Leslie of HBO’s Game of Thrones), and Henry (Theo James of Divergent), and a marriage with a problem...time travel,” the release reads.

Game of Thrones star Rose Leslie stars as Clare Abshire, a fiery, clever and unstoppable young woman, who for most of her life has had an amazing secret. Since she was 6 years old, Clare has had an imaginary friend: a kind and funny man, sometimes old, sometimes young, who appears in the woods behind her house and tells her tales of the future.

This mysterious man is of course Theo James as Henry DeTamble, who has been a time traveler since he was just 8 years old. Far from being a superpower, it is in fact a condition. He simply cannot help leaping through time. Sometimes, when Henry is stressed or worried — and sometimes for no reason at all — he loses his grip on the current moment and falls naked into the past or the future.

Due to this unusual condition, Henry’s life is a rollercoaster of constant danger and white-knuckle survival. Until one day he meets a beautiful redhead in the library where he works. Her name is Clare Abshire, and although he’s never seen her before, she claims to have known him all her life. Finally, his curse has given him something good, and Clare and Henry are about to have the time of their lives.

Published in 2003, The Time Traveler's Wife was very well-received by critics, eventually becoming a bestseller and winning the Exclusive Books Boeke Prize and a British Book Award. The source material has been adapted for live-action before, with 2009's The Time Traveler's Wife starring Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana. The big-screen outing received mixed reviews, with fans of the book looking forward to seeing what HBO will do with the material, and what Rose Leslie and Theo James will do with the central roles.

A serial adaptation should allow Steven Moffat and his team to better handle the sprawling, time-jumping story. The supporting cast for The Time Traveler’s Wife is made up of Desmin Borges as Gomez, one of Clare’s best friends; Natasha Lopez is Charisse; Caitlin Shorey and Everleigh McDonell as younger versions of Clare Abshire; Michael Park as Philip Abshire, Clare’s father; Jaime Ray Newman as Lucille Abshire, Clare’s mother; Brian Altemus and Jason David as younger versions of Henry DeTamble; and Chelsea Frei is Ingrid.

The Time Traveler’s Wife is due to be released in the Spring of 2022.
