The Umbrella Academy's third season is coming in 2022 and will take us into the hotel that "no-one could escape." Netflix have released a very short teaser announcement that puts the action of the new season taking place inside the Hotel Oblivion, and while it does not set down an exact premiere date, the black and white animation-based teaser did reveal that it will be in 2022. While there is still nothing really known about what we can expect from the third season, we know the names of the ten episodes that will make up the series based on the comic book series from My Chemical Romance's Gerard Way.

For those who have not yet boarded the hit series, The Umbrella Academy holds some similarities with Marvel's X-Men franchise, with the story beginning with 43 women around the world giving birth to babies without ever showing signs of being pregnant on the same day. Eccentric billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves adopts seven of these children who become a team of superheroes that work under the name of The Umbrella Academy. While, in a parallel with Stranger Things, the children are given numbers rather than names by Hargreeves, their robot-mother names them Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, Five, Ben and Vanya. Six of the children work as crime fighters, while the seventh, Vanya, is kept apart from the group's activities having not demonstrated any exceptional powers of her own.

Elliot Page leads the cast as Vanya, while Tom Hopper, David Castaneda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan and Aidan Gallagher play the other youngsters of the Umbrella Academy. In unusual style, the first season received a 76% approval rate on Rotten Tomatoes, which was surpassed by its second season which currently has a 91% approval rating. Netflix were pleased enough with the reported 45 million viewers that the first season had, which saw it take third place in their end of year TV series rankings, to go ahead with the second season, which itself broke all kinds of viewing records when it arrived in July 2020.

While some critics have been quick to make comparisons between the Umbrella Academy and the likes of Back To The Future, Avengers: Age of Ultron and the TV series Heroes, calling it out as having no new ideas and just being a mishmash of story elements from other well known properties, the overall viewing numbers and the majority of critic and audience reviews have proven that while there may be no new ideas in Hollywood, people will still watch and enjoy them if they reworked the right way.

The third season was given the green light by Netflix in November 2020, and was set to begin filming in February this year. Thanks to events of the season two, the third season will see the arrival of the Sparrow Academy, a group that is formed by Hargreeves in an alternative timeline which doesn't exactly feature dopplegangers of the Umbrella Academy kids, but it may as well do. How all this will move forward in season three is something we will find out next year, but with series showrunner Steve Blackman previously saying he would like to stay as true as possible to the original source comics, fans of the books will already have a good idea of just where it will all lead.
