It won't be long now before The Walking Dead is over. After it was previously reported that a supersized eleventh season would serve as the last for the show, fans knew to expect the long-running zombie drama to end its run on AMC. As of now, production is still moving forward on the show's final episodes, but the endgame is getting very close with just three episodes left to shoot. The Walking Dead director of photography says on Instagram that they are now on the "last stretch" of the series.

"It's been ten years 'gone bye;' what lies ahead are two more to come and stories and stories to tell beyond that," former Walking Dead showrunner and chief content officer Scott Gimple said when the show's cancelation was announced in 2020. "What's clear is that this show has been about the living, made by a passionate cast, team of writer/producers, producers, and crew, bringing to life the vision put forth by Robert Kirkman in his brilliant comic — and supported by the best fans in the world."

The Walking Dead has been on the air since 2010. Originally developed for television by Frank Darabont, the series is inspired by the comic book series of the same name from Skybound and author Robert Kirkman. The show is set in a post-apocalyptic world where the dead come back to life and feast upon the living unless their brains are destroyed. Whatever the virus is, they all have it, and this new life means managing the walking dead as well as other dangerous humans.

The Walking Dead Will Continue Through Its Spinoffs

Kim Dickens
AMC

The walkers are not necessarily leaving AMC, as the network will move forward with the spinoff shows after the main series ends. Fear the Walking Dead is still chugging ahead and it was recently announced that series star Kim Dickens would be making her return. There will also be a separate anthology series called Tales from the Walking Dead which will present a different standalone story each in each episode set in the Walking Dead universe. Meanwhile, Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride will be sticking together in a planned spinoff following their characters Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier.

"Daryl's relationship with Carol has always been my favorite relationship on the show—sorry, Rick. I love the way these characters interact and relate to each other on so many levels and can't wait to see where their ride goes from here," Reedus said in a statement. That series is expected to arrive sometime in 2023.

The Walking Dead flagship series has been my creative home for a decade and so it’s bittersweet to bring it to an end, but I could not be more excited to be working with Scott Gimple and AMC to develop a new series for Daryl and Carol," adds showrunner Angela Kang. "Working with Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride has been a highlight of my career and I’m thrilled that we get to keep telling stories together.”
