Casual fans of The Walking Dead would be forgiven for not noticing the main series ended this year. With three new spin-offs coming to AMC next year, as well as existing shows like Fear The Walking Dead still going, there will be almost as much Walking Dead action to come in 2023. According to AMC chief content officer Scott Gimple, who is overseeing the ever-expanding Walking Dead universe, there are already other shows being considered for the future.

The end of The Walking Dead delivered teases of the upcoming return of Rick Grimes, who, along with Michonne, will be back for his own limited series, as well as sending Daryl off on his journey to Europe. In addition, fan-favorite anti-hero Negan and Maggie will be heading to New York to avoid becoming zombie-chow in a rotting Big Apple. However, there are still plenty of other characters left behind, and according to Gimple, they could provide stories for more spin-offs and limited series. He told AMC Blog:

"I will say, I'm hoping these are the first stories and characters we explore, and I really hope we do more. I hope we get to do that eventually and I really, really do want to get into these other characters and other mythologies and other situations, so I'm hoping these are the first. I have a lot of dreams of doing more. Right now, we're concentrating on these, but give us a little while, and I hope that we can jump into other characters. In some ways, we are working on some, but we're not urgently working on them. We want to get these shows up on their feet and then start widening out the world again."

Should The Walking Dead’s Finale Have Been a Definitive End?

Usually, the end of a long-running franchise is a big deal, but with The Walking Dead’s last-ever episode pulling in the second-lowest season finale, is it time that the show was put to rest? While there has been a huge drop-off in viewership of the series in its last few seasons, the show has continued to pull in some of the highest viewing figures and ratings for any scripted show on AMC and network TV in general.

The rise in streaming has partly been to blame for the decreasing number of people willing to allow a series to run its course before binging a whole show in one go on AMC+ or other streaming platforms. This has made it quite difficult to gauge successfully which shows are still popular and which are not.

AMC has shown its faith in The Walking Dead’s universe, especially considering how many scripted shows have been recently canceled at other networks and on the likes of Netflix. Whether audiences will respond to that by tuning in to their many spin-offs next year is something that we will know soon enough.
