We are fast approaching the end of The Walking Dead, and it would seem that executive producer and FX guru Greg Nicotero has some Easter eggs in store for fans in the final batch of episodes. In previous seasons, Nicotero and the show's FX team have paid tribute to various horror films with certain props or walker designs. Now, A Nightmare on Elm Street can be added to the list as fans watching The Walking Dead on Sunday night observed a reference to Robert Englund's Freddy Krueger.Per iHorror, the Freddy reference comes during a scene with survivors including Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan) traversing through a sewer when they happen to run into a walker that looks very familiar. Its burned, bald head bears a very strong resemblance to Freddy Krueger, and upon a closer look, it appears that the zombie is even wearing a striped sweater. These details can be hard to make out due to the darkness of the scene, but they are clear enough to have many horror fans notice the clear reference when watching the episode. You can take a look at some of the fan reactions and photos of the Freddy Krueger zombie below.

Tribute Zombies Are Nothing New on The Walking Dead

This Week's Walking Dead Features an Awesome Creepshow Tribute

Of course, fans have been prepped to look for Easter eggs in episodes of The Walking Dead, especially with zombies resembling other characters. Recognizable zombies from classic George A. Romero flicks like Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead can be found in previous seasons, and a familiar crate from Creepshow can be spotted at one point as well. Even stepping outside of horror, Nicotero even paid tribute to RoboCop in a season 8 episode with a walker designed to look like a character from the action sci-fi film.

The final episodes of The Walking Dead air Sunday nights on AMC.
