The Walking Dead creator Frank Darabont shocked the TV world by stepping down as the showrunner of the AMC series yesterday. It seems the network has moved fast to replace him, naming writer-producer Glen Mazzara as the new showrunner for The Walking Dead Season 2.

Back in February, we reported that Glen Mazzara was hired to be Frank Darabont's second in command for Season 2, overseeing a writing staff of five new writers. Glen Mazzara will continue to write and produce for The Walking Dead, while also overseeing the day-to-day operations of the show.

Glen Mazzara wrote one episode of The Walking Dead as a freelancer in Season One. He also has served as a showrunner on the first season of the Starz program Crash, and Season 2 of TNT's Hawthorne.

Production is currently under way on Season 2 of The Walking Dead in Atlanta, which is slated to premiere on October 16 on AMC.
