The Weinstein Co. and BBC Films have bought the rights to the African Wildlife Feature, The Meerkats.

They've hired James Honeyborne to direct the life of a meerkat family's struggle to survive. The Hollywood Reporter says The BBC Natural History Unit has been involved in feature films that have developed from its own television series, such as Blue Planet and the forthcoming Earth, but this is the first time it has begun a project with intentions of producing it as a feature film.

No release date has been for The Meerkats, which is set to begin shooting this month in the Kalahari Desert.
