In a story from Variety Sony Pictures Classics will be putting out director Michael Haneke's The White Ribbon on December 25.

This film won the Palme d'Or at this year's Cannes Film Festival.

Shot in black-and-white the film takes place in a German village right before World War 1. It examines "a winding trail of malicious deeds."

Sony Classics picked up the film just as Cannes was starting up this year.

The White Ribbon is set to open in Los Angeles and New York on December 25.

It will be competing with movies like Sherlock Holmes and Alvin and The Chipmunks: The Squeakuel.
