Fans of Supernatural, get ready because the prequel series, The Winchesters, is set to hit our screens soon. Supernatural, starring Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki as Dean and Sam Winchester, ran from 2005 to 2020 and followed the brothers as they hunted demons, ghosts, and monsters. The show was a huge hit, and its devoted fans could not get enough even after fifteen seasons. It even became the longest-running American live-action fantasy series, leaving a void when it concluded.

Luckily for fans, in June 2021, The Winchesters was announced and is said to connect to Supernatural in crazy ways. The show is produced by Jensen Ackles, who will appear once again as narrator, Dean Winchester, and his wife Danneel, who fans will recognize as Anael. Supernatural writer Robbie Thompson is also returning. The pilot began filming earlier this year in April in New Orleans, and fans can't wait to see what is in store.

Here is everything we know so far about The Winchesters.

The Winchesters: The Plot

Throughout Supernatural, we followed the Winchester family through their adventures, but this time, we get to delve into the family's history as Dean Winchester narrates his way through the story of his parents. John and Mary Winchester are the parents of the legendary demon hunter brothers, although, in Supernatural, we did not get to see much of their early days. Now, it is time to dig deep into the family's origins and how Mary, in particular, learned her demon slaying skills.

Set in 1972, we see John as he returns home from the Vietnam War. As he unexpectedly meets Mary by chance, he realizes that the world he lives in isn't what he thought it was as he attempts to help her fight a demon.

While after a death of a friend, Mary is reconsidering her job as a hunter, she is drawn to it after her father goes missing, which is a coincidence as John is struggling with the disappearance of his own father too. The two bond over their fathers, and John learns of this new, dark world. We are expected to understand exactly how the family began their dangerous monster-fighting business and watch the beautiful love story of how John and Mary meet, fight monsters together, and embark on a dangerous quest to find their missing fathers.

The newly released trailer from The CW sees Dean Winchester begin his narration and inform us of a mission to "uncover the truth about his parents."

The Winchesters: The Cast

The Winchesters

As narrator, Jensen Ackles reprises his role as Dean Winchester. The actor was most recently seen playing Soldier Boy on season 3 of The Boys. Young Mary Campbell, Dean's mother, is played by Meg Donnelly, who some may recognize from Disney Channel Original Movie Zombies and High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. Mary is on the verge of leaving the hunting business until her unexpected encounter with John Winchester, played by Drake Rodger, later becoming Dean's father. Rodger can also be seen in 2022's The In Between.

While the pair are searching for their fathers, they are joined by Latika Desai, played by Nida Khurshid, a trainee hunter, who helps them find answers. Joining the hunting cast is Jojo Fleites, who appears as Carlos Cervantez, who is a natural at the fighting game and a great pick-me-up in dark times. John might not know of his history, but his mother, Millie Winchester, does. Millie is played by Bianca Kajlich, as she tries to protect her son against their true family legacy.

A big journey might be ahead, but there wouldn't be any hunters without their hunting equipment. Demetria McKinney plays bookshop owner Ada Monroe, the go-to person for hunting supplies for their big quest.

Release Date

The pilot episode is underway and will premiere in the U.S. on October 11, 2022, followed by a new episode airing every Tuesday on The CW. There have not been any further details of how many episodes there will be, so fans will have to stay tuned. U.K. fans will have to hang on a bit longer as there has not been an update yet on when it will hit their screens, although we know that it will be streamed on E4.

There has been talk of a Supernatural spinoff before The Winchesters. In 2014, Supernatural: Bloodlines was on the table but was soon stopped during development. Again, Wayward Sisters was announced but, unfortunately, was canceled after the development of a pilot episode. Fans were unsure whether The Winchesters was going to go ahead, but it eventually got the green light, which means we can officially get excited and hope that the show succeeds.
