The latest trailer for The Witcher spinoff series, The Witcher: Blood Origin, finds Michelle Yeoh battling all manner of monsters, men, and everything in between on Netflix. Released courtesy of the official Netflix YouTube channel, The Witcher: Blood Origin will transport audiences thousands of years before the adventures of Geralt in the main The Witcher series and explore how the Witchers came to be. The magnificent Michelle Yeoh, who is best known for her roles in the likes of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Crazy Rich Asians, and Everything Everywhere All at Once, is on fine form as Scian, the last member of a nomadic tribe of sword-elves who finds herself on a mission to retrieve a blade stolen from her people.

The Witcher: Blood Origin is set in an elven world 1200 years before the time of Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri. The prequel series will tell a tale lost to history: the creation of the first prototype Witcher, and the events that led to the pivotal Conjunction of the Spheres, when the worlds of monsters, men, and elves merged to become one.

Created by Declan de Barra and Lauren Schmidt Hissrich and adapted from The Witcher book series by Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher: Blood Origin features an ensemble cast led by Sophia Brown (Giri/Haji) as Éile, a warrior of the Queen's guard who leaves to become a traveling musician and Laurence O'Fuarain (Vikings) as Fjall, a man on a quest for vengeance born into a clan of warriors sworn to protect the king alongside Michelle Yeoh as Scian.

"This is the story of seven vagabonds, warriors, heroes, whatever you want to call them, who honestly hate each other at the beginning,” Declan de Barra said of this particular fellowship. “They feel like they shouldn’t be on this quest together and then, as on any good heroes’ journey, they realize they need each other."

The rest of the cast includes Lenny Henry, Mirren Mack, Nathaniel Curtis, Dylan Moran, Jacob Collins-Levy, among others.

Creator Declan de Barra has also teased a “very different” type of Witcher to what fans are used to with Henry Cavill’s Geralt of Rivia. "This is a very different type of Witcher. It is a rough and nasty prototype that’s barely functioning, but you get the idea of how it’s going to be refined later on," de Barra explained recently.

The Witcher has proven to be hugely successful for Netflix so far, with several spinoffs, both animated and live-action, currently in the pipeline. However, fans of the series were left disappointed recently when Henry Cavill announced his departure from the series. The Man of Steel star will play Geralt for the final time in the upcoming third season, with The Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth set to take over.

The Witcher: Blood Origin is a four-part prequel miniseries and is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on December 25, 2022.
