The second season of the hit-fantasy series The Witcher just arrived on Netflix last month, but it now seems that the streaming service is already moving forward to begin production on the show's third season sooner than expected. According to Redanian Intelligence, pre-production for The Witcher season 3 is set to start this month, and begin filming sometime in early March. Before season 2 had even premiered on Netflix, it was revealed that the scripts for season 3 had already been written. The only downside to this is that fans are also being warned that this is all subject to change. It is also being reported that the filming will take place during the months of March to August 2022.

Production for the latest season of The Witcher was definitely problem-filled, from issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic, to a major injury sustained by series star Henry Cavill. Last November, Henry Cavill had opened up about the injury, telling The Hollywood Reporter that his on-set hamstring tear was very nearly "a complete detachment of the hamstring." The second season had already been in the works since before The Witcher season 1 premiered for the very first time and, after facing several delays, the newest season was finally released on Netflix on December 17, 2021. Many Witcher fans are now hoping that the production for its upcoming third season goes a lot smoother than the last.

Despite all of the problems that occurred during the show's production over the past two years, the second season seems to be doing very well for Netflix. Critical reception for The Witcher season 2 has been very strong, but the show’s audience rating on sites such as Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic has been much weaker than the previous season. This is believed to be due to a large part of fans of the book series and video games being upset with how the Netflix series had made some changes from its original source material. Some of these video gamers and readers are claiming that The Witcher is less of an adaptation and more of a fan fiction.

The Witcher season 2 ended with its three main characters together at Kaer Morhen following a fairly close encounter with the Wild Hunt on another sphere. Season 3 will begin to adapt "Time of Contempt" and see Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri deal with the Brotherhood of Sorcerers, Nilfgaard, and the Elves, who all want Ciri for different purposes. While fans have to wait for the release of its third season, a prequel series titled The Witcher: Blood Origin, will be set 1200 years before the events of the main series, and will feature many key revelations about the creation of the first Witcher, as well as the “Conjunction of the Spheres,” and the Wild Hunt. All of this is expected to play heavily into The Witcher season 3. The Time of Contempt is the second book in the Witcher Saga and in that book, Yennefer, Ciri, and Geralt all journey to Aretuza where a coup takes place, forcing this trio to separate once again.

Recently speaking with Netflix's Geeked channel after the premiere of season 2, Henry Cavill explained that things will be quite different for both Geralt and Yennefer following that big betrayal. "It’s a fairly extreme set of circumstances to come back from. It’s a tough one to forgive, it’s going to take some real work. The true development of Geralt this season is him being able to recognize that he can’t do this himself." Anya Chalotra also chimed in, explaining that Yennefer has a lot to learn too moving forward. "It’s habitual, isn’t it: she’s cowled, and she’s lived the kind of life she’s lived with all the rules she lives by, and that’s Yen and she don’t trust nobody. She might’ve learned to consider things more [...] and it’s going to be really hard to just delve into a new way of being."
