It is not too far from the truth to say that Netflix was fully committed to The Witcher before a single episode had even aired on the platform, with the second season being renewed before the December 2019 debut of the first season, and at the time showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich revealed that she had a seven season plan for the series if it was allowed to get that far. In an interview with Collider after the recent premiere of The Witcher's Season 2, Hissrich said that her initial seven season pitch is something that makes her laugh, because she could have said a much higher number.

“I love that seven season became the thing that we go to because I think also at one point, I said something that I would go for like 20 seasons and I’m glad that no one actually expects me to have 20 seasons. I would be dead by that.”

One thing that Hissrich makes clear is that however long the series runs, she wants to stay with the source material, which she called her “utmost goal” and the reason behind her original comments about a seven season project.

“I do think that my utmost goal and the reason I started with seven years is because I wanted to stay true to the books. I don’t feel the need for our story to go beyond where the books go," she explained. "I think Andrzej Sapkowski, the writer, he had a natural end in mind. Now actually, since we started the show, he has released more books, so we’ll have to see how that fits into it.”

While Hissrich is wanting to keep her focus on the stories as they play out in the books, that doesn’t mean she wants to follow the path of the first few seasons of Game of Thrones, which used one book per season. The storylines of Season 2 are primarily driven from the Blood of Elves novel, but she explained that there is one big part of the book that has been held back for Season 3, which was green lit earlier this year.

“I also think I’m not in a rush to get through these stories, you know? We approximately do a book a season, but we also make sure that the stories from that book are best in that season of our television show. So sometimes we move those chess pieces around a little bit. There’s a big story from Blood of Elves that we’re gonna do in Season 3 for instance. Or there was a short story that we couldn’t fit in Season 1, so we put it in Season 2. We try to be pretty flexible with that.”

There is no doubt that there is every chance that Hissrich will get her seven seasons of The Witcher and possibly more considering the number of spin-offs that Netflix already have in production on what is one of their prize assets. As well as Season 3 of the flagship show, other offerings from the Witcherverse are live action prequel, Blood Origin, as well as a new anime movie and a series aimed at children, meaning that there are plenty of exciting things heading to the platform in the near future.
