Henry Cavill's return to the role of Superman has come to a screeching halt even more quickly than he returned to the role for his special cameo in Black Adam. The long-awaited return was meant to tease several more appearances from Cavill's Superman in the years to come, perhaps battling Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's Black Adam in the ultimate battle. The news that Cavill would be resuming his run as the Man of Steel made the sting of his leaving The Witcher a bit more acceptable for the actor's fans.

Two months after Cavill announced his Superman return, leadership changes at DC Studios wound up putting the kibosh on the whole thing. Cavill announced on Thursday that he was finished with the character after having a meeting with new head honchoes James Gunn and Peter Safran, calling the result "sad news." Gunn subsequently announced that he's rebooting Superman from scratch once again, this time planning to introduce a younger version of the superhero.

Of course, this news has been met with great backlash, as fans were excited to see more of Cavill's Superman after his Black Adam return. Meanwhile, some fans were hopeful that this change of events might mean that Cavill will end up returning to The Witcher after all. Unfortunately for those fans, that won't be the case either. Per Variety, Netflix's head of U.S. and Canada scripted series, Peter Friedlander, confirmed that The Witcher is moving forward with Liam Hemsworth as Geralt for season 4, regardless of Cavill's Superman exit.

“Henry is an extraordinary Geralt and I think Liam will continue and also be an extraordinary Geralt,” Friedlander explained. “There has been a legacy of of amazing, iconic characters where the actors have changed and we’re hugely optimistic about this. We will continue to honor the IP, the fans, the storytelling, all the way through.”

There's still another season of Cavill as Geralt for fans to look forward to, as he finished filming season 3 of The Witcher before parting ways with the show. The fan response wasn't great, as many were pleading for Netflix to reverse course and bring back Cavill. A popular petition was even launched to restore his casting, and it managed to procure more than 285,000 names.

If nothing else, this fan support will let Cavill know how much the fans love him, even if it doesn't change certain casting decisions. What happens next with Cavill remains to be seen, though some fans are hopeful that he could end up becoming the next James Bond, a long-popular fantasy casting choice. In any case, we haven't seen the last of Cavill just yet.
