While Americans celebrated their independence with the 4th of July holiday earlier this month, production was getting under way on Thor: Ragnarok at Village Roadshow Studios in Australia. Over the past few weeks, we've already seen a number of set photos, along with a brief video from star Chris Hemsworth. As production continues today, the sequel welcomes new cast member Tessa Thompson, who started filming today.

Tessa Thompson, who was confirmed to play Valkyrie in May, revealed on Instagram that today is her first day on Thor: Ragnarok, while sharing fan art of her as Valkyrie with her followers. Very little is known about how the character will be portrayed or how she fits into the story, but hopefully more details surface as production continues in Australia. Here's what Tessa Thompson had to say in her Instagram post, honoring the "Warriors" leading 'movements' in the real world.

"Inspired by all the Warriors leading movements in the very real world right now, as I start my first day being one in the MCU for #Thor3 . &#[email protected] . Fan art by @nikkolasdesign"

Tessa Thompson is joined by a number of other new cast members such as Cate Blanchett's Hela, Jeff Goldblum as The Grandmaster and Karl Urban as Skurge. They will be joined by Thor franchise stars Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Idris Elba (Heimdall) and Anthony Hopkins (Odin), along with Mark Ruffalo as Hulk. Very little is known about the story, but there have been rumors that both Thor and Hulk go on a "cosmic road trip," after the villainous Hela teams up with Loki to banish Thor from Asgard. It has also been rumored that Hela destroys Thor's mighty hammer Mjolnir, with Thor meeting Hulk on a gladiator planet where Hulk is the current champion.

Just yesterday, Mark Ruffalo shared a brief video from the set showcasing his huge Hulk hands, but we'll have to wait and see what other videos and photos surface from the set. Marvel already set a November 3, 2017 release date, with this superhero sequel currently the only movie set for release on that date. We'll have to wait and see if any other studios decided to compete against this superhero adventure in the months to come.
