Following the reveal of The Mighty Thor in the recently released trailer for the upcoming Marvel sequel Thor: Love and Thunder, some new merchandise has unveiled further details regarding how Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster will become the latest MCU superhero. An online listing for an officially-licensed replica of The Mighty Thor's helmet from Thor: Love and Thunder confirms that the return of the live-action Jane Foster will feature the cancer storyline over from The Mighty Thor’s much-celebrated comic book run.

“Suffering from cancer, astrophysicist and Thor’s ex-girlfriend, Jane Foster, visited New Asgard and her life was changed forever. Mysteriously, the broken pieces of Mjolnir, the hammer of the thunder god, transformed her into the Mighty Thor and gifted her the superpowers of Thor, to battle threats internal and external. Wielding Mjolnir herself, she had become a godly protector and a new hero was born!”

Created by Jason Aaron and artist Russell Dauterman, Jane Foster’s The Mighty Thor is diagnosed with breast cancer following the deaths of her husband and son in a car accident. Initially unidentified, Jane picks up Mjolnir and takes possession of Thor’s powers. However, Jane's use of the hammer stops her chemotherapy from working, perpetuating her cancer each time she transforms and putting her in a very difficult situation. A situation that, according to the description alongside the replica helmet, will seemingly be carried over into Thor: Love and Thunder.

“With the help of Thor, Valkyrie, and the Guardians of the Galaxy, the Mighty Thor was faced by the powerful Gorr, the God Butcher. With divine powers himself, Gorr was driven to rid the universe of gods wherever he found them. Battling cancer in her human form and Gorr in her godly form, Jane Foster was embroiled in an epic struggle with plenty of love and thunder!”

Thor: Love and Thunder finds Thor on a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher, played by Academy Award winner Christian Bale, who seeks the extinction of the gods. Not much has yet been revealed regarding Bale’s role as the villain, with the character entirely absent from the recent trailer. However, thanks to some official merchandise, it does appear that the actor will forgo the character’s alien-like look, instead opting for just silver skin and white robes alongside his all-powerful All-Black the Necrosword.

To combat the threat of Gorr the God Butcher, Thor enlists the help of his old friends King Valkyrie, Korg and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster, who inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher's vengeance and stop him before it's too late.

Directed by Taika Waititi, and starring Chris Hemsworth as Thor, alongside Tessa Thompson, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Chris Pratt, Jaimie Alexander, Pom Klementieff, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn, Jeff Goldblum, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper, Thor: Love and Thunder is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 8, 2022, as part of Phase Four of the MCU.
