Thor: Love and Thunder is a mere four months away, but Christian Bale has now been reportedly called back for reshoots on the Marvel sequel, with the actor suiting up for more material from his villain Gorr the God Butcher. According to The Ankler’s Jeff Sneider, Thor: Love and Thunder is undergoing reshoots as of now, with Christian Bale currently working with Marvel Studios on bringing more Gorr to the fore.

The report claims that these reshoots are what is holding Marvel Studios back from releasing a trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder, something which we would have typically expected to see by now, considering the movie’s release date in July.

Despite the ongoing filming on Thor: Love and Thunder, and its impending release date, we still have yet to see much from the highly anticipated MCU movie — particularly where Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher is concerned. Aside from a few fleeting set images of the actor in costume, no images of the villain have yet been revealed or released.

The Dark Knight star Christian Bale will enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the villainous Gorr the God Butcher. Born on a planet with no name and living every day on the brink of starvation, Gorr was taught to trust in the gods, but they never answered his prayers. After living a tragic life filled with death and struggle, Gorr abandoned his belief in the Gods, which led to his exile. Soon, Gorr witnesses a pair of battling gods and, realizing that they did indeed exist, they just didn’t care, Gorr becomes enraged. Bonding with the dark god’s sword, Gorr is transformed into an amorphous mass of living darkness, his hatred of the gods leading him on a revenge mission across time and space and on a collision course with Thor. How closely Thor: Love and Thunder will stick to this origin remains to be seen, but the character should provide the Oscar-winning Christian Bale with plenty of opportunities to impress.

While fans tend to hear the words “last-minute reshoots” and go into a slight panic, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has explained in the past that they are simply a part of their process.

“‘Reshoots’ was a bad word. ‘Oh this movie’s in reshoots, there must be a problem,’” Feige said, before explaining that they are not always a cause for concern. “Reshoots are key to our films, starting with Iron Man. We always say we’re smart filmmakers at Marvel, but we’re not geniuses and the best way to give notes on a movie is to watch the movie. So we make the movie and go, ‘Oh yeah, no that’s not right. That doesn’t work,” and have a system now that can be quite precise and efficient. [Reshoots last] sometimes one day, sometimes fifteen days, sometimes more to continue to go in and make the movie the best it can be.”

Directed by Taika Waititi and starring Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Chris Pratt, Jaimie Alexander, Pom Klementieff, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn, Jeff Goldblum, and Vin Diesel, Thor: Love and Thunder is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 8, 2022, as part of Phase Four of the MCU.
