Now that the reviews are in, the Rotten Tomatoes score for Thor: Love and Thunder has now been revealed. And it’s not great news for director Taika Waititi’s Marvel sequel. Thor: Love and Thunder currently sits at 72% based on 148 reviews which, while a pretty worthy score, places the sequel way down in the low end of Marvel outings. While Rotten Tomatoes is certainly not the be-all and end-all for movie criticism, it does at least offer some idea of where the MCU installment sits within the franchise, and hey, it’s just a bit of fun alright?

“In some ways, Thor: Love and Thunder feels like Ragnarok redux -- but overall, it offers enough fast-paced fun to make this a worthy addition to the MCU,” says the Rotten Tomatoes critical consensus.

The 29th installment in the long-running Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thor: Love and Thunder’s 72% puts it below the first Thor adventure (which stands at 77%) and only just in front of the much-maligned Thor: The Dark World (which sits at an only just fresh 66%). Thor: Love and Thunder’s score falls well behind that of Thor: Ragnarok, which sits sky-high on the MCU overall ranking with a very fresh 93%.

The only Marvel movies trailing behind Thor: Love and Thunder are Iron Man 2 (tied with 72%), The Incredible Hulk (67%), and Eternals which, at 47%, remains the only “Rotten” movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Triumphantly standing at the top of the table are the likes of Black Panther (96%), Avengers: Endgame (94%), and the first Iron Man (94%).

While Thor: Love and Thunder’s Rotten Tomatoes score could go up or down over the next few days or so, it is unlikely to change dramatically. Meaning that Thor: Love and Thunder has not impressed critics to anywhere near the same level as the majority of the Marvel series. Of course, the audience score still awaits...

Thor: Love and Thunder finds Thor on a journey unlike anything he's ever faced -- a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher, who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie, Korg and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster, who -- to Thor's surprise -- inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher's vengeance and stop him before it's too late.

Directed by Taika Waititi, who co-wrote the script with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, Thor: Love and Thunder stars Chris Hemsworth reprising the role of Thor alongside Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Natalie Portman as Jane Foster / Mighty Thor, Taika Waititi as Korg, Jaimie Alexander as Sif, and Russell Crowe as Zeus.

Thor: Love and Thunder is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 8, 2022, as part of Phase Four of the MCU.
