The first trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder, the fourth movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Thor saga overall and the second to be directed by Our Flag Means Death actor Taika Waititi, was released on Monday, April 18th. With it, MCU fans got the first official glimpse of Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) as the eponymous superhero, Mighty Thor! While Marvel fans were surprised by the unexpected reveal and flocked to social media to share their excitement, no one was more surprised by the appearance of the hammer-wielding hero than Thor Odinson (Chris Hemsworth). However, Portman's new look as Thor comes straight from the pages of Marvel Comics — just look at the helmet!

Were you surprised to see Foster wielding Mjölnir instead of the Odinson? Probably not, since MCU fans have the insight powers of Gwenpool (which can really mess with a superhero's head, even those named Thor). Take a look; the answer’s in a book: specifically, a comic book!

In Original Sin (2014) #7 by Jason Aaron, Mike Deodato, Frank Martin, Chris Eliopoulos, and Julian Totino Tedesco, subtitled “Nick Fury Vs. The World,” Fury whispers something in Odinson's ear as they’re battling in Earth’s orbit. While the issue doesn’t reveal just what it is that Fury whispered to Thor, Mjölnir immediately plummets to the surface of Earth’s moon. While this usually wouldn’t be a big deal for Odinson, the consequences of whatever it was that Fury whispered are dire. Odinson can no longer pick up Mjölnir: he has become unworthy!

In Original Sin #8, he continues to struggle and attempt to pick up the hammer to no avail after the battle has concluded. Then, in Thor (2014) #1 by Aaron, Russell Dauterman, Matthew Wilson, Joe Sabino, and Martin, “If He Be Worthy,” readers again see Odinson on the Lunar surface attempting to pick up Mjölnir to no avail. However, a mysterious woman approaches the hammer at the end of the issue. As she puts her hand on it, an “s” appears in the inscription, so now it reads “If She Be Worthy.” We don’t learn the woman's identity until later because her helm shields her face, but this is the beginning of Foster’s tenure as Thor.

Will the inscription on the hammer behave in the same way in the MCU as in the comics? It’s possible, but there’s another option as far as the pronouns on Mjölnir’s inscription go, and we may have gotten a glimpse of it at 742 Evergreen Terrace.

In a short cartoon featuring the main characters of The Simpsons and the MCU, Lisa Simpson (Yeardley Smith), the moral center of both her family and Springfield, USA in general, ends up traveling to the realm of Asgard. When she arrives, she finds Mjölnir, which bears an inscription that reads: “If They Be Worthy.” As Lisa lifts the hammer, she is transformed into a version of Thor, unmistakably styled after the Jane Foster incarnation. You can see Springfield’s most worthy Mjölnir-wielder for yourself in “The Good, The Bart, and the Loki,” co-starring Tom Hiddleston, and available for streaming on Disney+ now.
