Titans was renewed for its fourth season shortly before the third season ended. Now we’ll see the whole crew reunited after their battle to save Gotham city – and their friends – pushed them to their very limit. On the last day of New York Comic Con, the Titans season 4 panel gave us a release date, a teaser trailer, and first looks at some very cool costumes we’ll see in the future. DC’s darker, more mature comic evolution of the heroes that used to be the Teen Titans sees its fruition in this series as Nightwing unites a group of heroes that manage to save the world despite the difficulties they face working together.

The teaser trailer for season 4 is frightening, implying that this may be the darkest season of Titans yet. It isn’t very long, but in those few seconds, we see and hear a lot of what may be to come. As it opens on a dark rune, we hear chanting in the background, “Azarath Metrion Zinthos!” Any fan of Titans will recognize those words. But after we see Mother Mayhem’s staff being dragged across the lava-scorched ground, a hand reaches up from what may be a pool filled with blood.

If the last season of Titans seemed to focus on Batman lore, this season looks like it’s going in the direction of Raven’s dark magic.

Titans: The Plot

Last season we saw the Titans run all over Gotham city, trying to discover the mystery behind Jason Todd’s death and protect the city while an emotionally shattered Bruce Wayne was absent. After Todd became the Red Hood and worked with Jonathon Crane to take over Gotham, the Titans eventually defeated the pair, freeing Todd from Crane’s control but losing their friend Hank along the way.

Last we saw, the Titans were going on a little road trip in their RV. From Deadline, the logline for season four reads:

“Having saved Gotham, the Titans hit the road to head back to San Francisco. But after a stop in Metropolis, they find themselves in the crosshairs of a supernatural cult with powers unlike anything they’ve faced before.”

Fans of Titans will recognize the magic words from the teaser, “Azarath Metrion Zinthos.” Rachel Roth will occasionally use them to conjure her powers as Raven. But they are also the dark words used for many magicks from the plane of Azarath. The season 4 sneak peek photos included a look at Brother Blood in his costume and Mother Mayhem. We’ll likely see those two leading the charge against the Titans this time.

But whose hand was it reaching out of the blood pool? It was likely Brother Blood performing some ancient and evil rite. But the Church of Blood could be after more than just resurrecting their leader. It’s possible they could be after Rachel to use her powers to once again bring Trigon to this world to conquer Earth. Trigon, of course, being Rachel’s demonic father. We haven’t seen him since season one. After Rachel is successful in controlling her powers and banishing him back to his evil realm, this may be when the Church of Blood has found a way to bring him back.

Titans: The Cast

titans
HBO Max

Titans' core cast will remain largely the same. But this season, we’ll be getting a few more actors showing up as their enemies and allies change. Brenton Thwaites will remain Dick Grayson (Nightwing). Anna Diop will reprise her role as Kory Anders (Starfire). Joshua Orpin will still play Conner Kent (Superboy). And Teagan Croft will still play Rachel Roth (Raven) though it’s very likely we’ll be seeing a lot more of her this season than we did in season 3.

Though Rachel was sent off to attempt to resurrect Donna Troy (Conor Leslie) in the third season, she might not have been the most essential character in these Batman-heavy stories. But now there is dark magic afoot, and she will definitely be an important character, if not the center of this coming season.

Ryan Potter will reprise his role as Gar Logan (Beast Boy), but this season, he’s getting a bit of an upgrade. The New York Comic Con photos show Gar in a brand-new super suit. The red spandex is accurate to his suit in the comics, and hopefully, Gar won’t have to look for someone else’s clothes so often anymore.

The photos also show Franka Potente as Mother Mayhem, wielding her giant magical staff, and Joseph Morgan as Brother Blood in a new take on how the character looks. Nonetheless, Brother Blood looks just as evil and imposing as ever in his orange cape and bone mask. The cast also lists Jay Lycurgo as Tim Drake and Lisa Ambalavanar as Jinx in recurring roles. It will be exciting to see how the Robin-hopeful and mischievous magic user fit into the series.
