Tom Hardy and Michael Shannon have signed on to star in The Long Red Road for Paul Neesan and Richard Fant's Whipsmart production company.

The story is adapted from the Brett C. Leonard play that centers on Sam (Tom Hardy), a man who tries to drink his sorrows away on a South Dakota Indian reservation. He is forced to reevaluate his life when a face from his past comes to visit. Tom Hardy will actually be reprising the same role he portrayed in the play, which debuted at Chicago's Goodman Theater in 2010. Michael Shannon is playing Sam's older brother.

Philip Seymour Hoffman directed the original play, although it is unknown if he will take the helm on this feature adaptation. Brett C. Leonard will write the adapted screenplay and produce alongside Paul Neesan and Richard Fant. It isn't known when production will begin.
