While Tom Holland’s future as the MCU’s live-action Spider-Man is pretty much certain, it has been reported that he won’t be providing the voice of Peter Parker in the new animated Disney+ series Spider-Man: Freshman Year. When Marvel Studios released their What If…? series, certain characters were played by voice actors other than those who have played them in the live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it seems like the same will happen in the new Spider-Man series.

Having rounded off the Spider-Man trilogy with Spider-Man: No Way Home earlier this year, Tom Holland is now expected to return in a new trilogy of Spider-Man films being planned between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures. However in late 2021, a new animated series entitled Spider-Man: Freshman Year was announced by Disney, which will act as a prequel series to Tom Holland’s Spider-Man movies. The series will effectively act as an origin story of Peter Parker’s transition to Spider-Man, but so far, there has been no word on who exactly will play the young web-slinger.

In a new report from The Illuminerdi, it has been claimed that Holland will not be playing Spider-Man in the show, but there has not yet been any indication of who will take on the role instead. In the What If…? series, Spider-Man’s appearance was voiced by Hudson Thames, and in his time on that series, Thames became one of the most popular alternative castings, which will surely put him as the first choice to take on the role again.

The official synopsis for Spider-Man: Freshman Year reads, "the animated series follows Peter Parker on his way to becoming Spider-Man in the MCU, with a journey unlike we've ever seen and a style that celebrates the character's early comic book roots." The original announcement of the series was made as part of last year’s Disney+ Day, which also included reveals about the new animated X-Men ’97 and Marvel Zombies shows. With Marvel having a specific animation panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con later this week, it is expected that more about all of these shows will be revealed then.

When Spider-Man made his MCU debut in Captain America: Civil War, he was already a super-powered hero in the making. Spider-Man: Freshman Year will go back in time to provide more of an insight into how he became that character and will see Peter Parker’s origin story finally arrive in the MCU. While Marvel Studios have a lot of focus on their live-action movies and TV shows, their animated roster of shows has become an important part of the future of Marvel’s Disney+ lineup. Their next release will be the I Am Groot series of shorts featuring the fan-favorite character from the Guardians of the Galaxy series of films, and that is expected to be followed by a second season of What If…? Of course, more on all of this will likely be revealed later this week, with many fans hoping for some exciting previews to come from the SDCC panel.
