The hype is growing for Spider-Man: No Way Home, as excitement mounts over the latest adventure of the webbed wall-crawler. The film is set to feature a clash between the various live-action Spider-Man movie franchises of the past two decades. It is confirmed to involve a plethora of villains old and new, and lead actor Tom Holland recently explained in an interview that his version of Spidey will have to fight in a more brutal manner than ever before.

"There are some fight scenes in this movie that are very violent. And it's a fighting style different from what we've seen before. But really you will get to see spiderman using his fists in a "fight or run" situation."

Despite being an immensely powerful character, Spider-Man has always been defined by his restraint. While anti-heroes like Wolverine and Venom take an almost gleeful pleasure in going all-out against their enemies, Spidey takes great pains to make sure his attacks only incapacitate his foes rather than causing any long-lasting damage.

This deep sense of caution carried over into the MCU when Holland's Spider-Man made his debut in 2016's Captain America: Civil War. Despite being thrown into the middle of a superpowered beatdown between Team Iron Man and Team Cap with very little prior experience, Spider-Man took care to only web up his opponents.

Later movies also rarely showed the webbed wall-crawler using his fists except for special occasions, like when Tom Holland had to go up against the Mad Titan Thanos in 2018's Avengers: Infinity War. But in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Spidey will have to deal with multiple enemies at once, which means his usual schtick of swinging away from trouble and using his webs from a safe distance will not work as well.

The trailer for the upcoming film reveals that Spider-Man's whole world has turned upside down. After the events of 2019's Spider-Man: Far From Home, everyone knows Peter Parker is Spider-Man thanks to Mysterio leaking the information to the press. An attempt to make everyone forget that fact using magic tears a hole in the multiverse, sending supervillains from other realities tumbling into the MCU.

We have already caught glimpses of Holland's Spider-Man being overpowered by both Doctor Strange and Doctor Octopus. There is also a scene that has Spidey launching into battle against the combined might of Electro, Lizard, and The Sandman. Little wonder that the arachnid superhero will have to fight tooth and nail to survive such dangerous encounters.

Interestingly, previous versions of Spider-Man played by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield were a lot more willing to engage in fisticuffs than Holland's take on the character. If the other two Spider-Men are also joining No Way Home, as is the rumor persisting across the fandom, it could be that Holland's Spider-Man takes inspiration from them to finally start fighting at his full potential instead of relying on webbing and his tech suit to solve his problems.

Spider-Man: No Way Home comes out in theaters on December 17. This news originated at Comic Book Resources.
