Spider-Man: No Way Home has performed amazingly at the box office this past weekend, continuing the love affair between audiences worldwide and the ongoing story of the MCU, while more or less single-handedly saving 2021 from being another cinematic dud of a year overall. Now Tom Holland has suggested that his Marvel future may still be up in the air, but he would be happy to go out on his latest performance as it will probably win him an Oscar. Although the actor was joking when he said it, fans would certainly back him for such an accolade if they had their way.

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man swung into the MCU as part of Captain America: Civil War and became an instant fan-favorite all over again as one of Marvel’s most iconic heroes. By the time Spider-Man: Far From Home was released in 2019, much had changed in the MCU and for a short time it seemed that there was going to be another upheaval for the web-slinger when Sony and Disney had a major fallout and Peter Parker seemed set to leave the MCU without his trilogy of movies being completed. However, Tom Holland turned into a real-life superhero when he made personal pleas to Disney’s Bob Iger and Sony’s Tom Rothman, which was partially responsible for the two companies striking a new deal that kept Spider-Man in the MCU and also brought the Marvel Studios and Sony universes closer than ever.

While speaking to The Hollywood Reporter as part of the Spider-Man: No Way Home promotion push, Holland answered the question of what his future holds when it comes to the MCU by saying he doesn’t currently know exactly where Spider-Man will go in the future but he could end up taking away an accolade for his work on the film. He said:

"I do know that I love this character, and I would be sad to say goodbye. But I have achieved basically everything I wanted to achieve as this character, I really think I’m going to win the Oscar for this movie. So there, it’s great."

Although the actor didn’t seem to be in a serious mood while making the comments, they do follow on from Marvel boss Kevin Feige’s opinion that there is a lot of bias around superhero movies when it comes to the dishing out of awards. Although Black Panther did bring seven nominations Marvel’s way in 2019, they have constantly found themselves out of luck at many ceremonies, including the Emmy’s and the recently Golden Globe nominations which saw only WandaVision’s lead stars Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany getting a nod.

It doesn’t seem likely that Holland will be walking away with a statue when the Academy make their next round of decisions, but Spider-Man: No Way Home's $600 million opening weekend box office and critical acclaim will no doubt soften the blow of not being bathed in Oscar glory, and of course there are not many actors of Holland’s age who can say they have been one of the key components of the biggest film franchise in cinematic history.
