The new Top Gun: Maverick trailer drops tomorrow, Monday, December 16th. Tom Cruise announced the news on social media while also unveiling a new poster for the highly anticipated sequel. The first movie hit theaters in 1986 and launched Cruise's career as an A-list celebrity after grossing over $356 million. Since then, the movie has only gotten bigger, with fans wondering for decades if they'd ever see Cruise back in the role as Maverick. By 2017, most fans had given up hope, so it came as a major shock when the actor confirmed that it was really happening.

The latest poster for Top Gun: Maverick features Tom Cruise's main character leaning on what appears to be a World War II era plane, while looking up at the sky to see two modern fighter jets. It's a simple and clean poster that also features the iconic logo of the original. The first Top Gun 2 trailer was released over the summer during San Diego Comic-Con and it immediately started to raise hype for the project, especially since Cruise personally premiered it at the annual event.

As for those fighter jets that are in the new movie, including the latest Top Gun: Maverick poster, they are not the iconic F-14 Tomcats from the original movie. The Navy introduced that specific plane in the early 1980s, mainly to intercept bombers and protect aircraft carriers. The sequel is using the F/A-18F Super Hornet, which was introduced in the 1990s. The jet is a little bit more diverse than the F-14 Tomcat, boasting both air-to-ground and air-to-air capabilities. This has already been teased in the first trailer for the sequel.

The Top Gun: Maverick storyline has been kept under wraps, but we may get some more information when the new trailer lands tomorrow. The first trailer was met with excitement with huge doses of nostalgia, but now should be the time to introduce the new faces of the movie, along with some more details. Will we get a chance to see Val Kilmer return as Iceman? That is unclear at the moment, but that would be huge if he was teased in the upcoming footage.

Fans have waited over 30 years to see Tom Cruise back as Maverick. Expectations are sure to be high, but if the reaction to the first trailer is any indication, Cruise and crew will have no problem at that box office in June. Top Gun: Maverick was originally set to hit theaters much earlier, but production took a breather to work out the logistics of presenting flight sequences with new technology and planes, according to a Paramount statement released at the time. Whatever the case may be, it looks like the wait was worth it. You can check out the new Top Gun: Maverick poster below, thanks to Tom Cruise's Twitter account, and check out the trailer tomorrow.
