Netflix’s upcoming vampire comedy Day Shift calls for more than your average garlic-around-the-neck, stake-in-the-heart type of slaying. Naturally, anything produced by John Wick director Chad Stahelski calls for action and lots of it, comedy or not. The movie stars Oscar winner Jamie Foxx who plays a pool cleaner named Bud Jablonski, who moonlights as a vampire hunter and, making his feature directorial debut is accomplished stunt performer J.J. Perry.

In Day Shift, Foxx’s mundane San Fernando Valley pool cleaning job is a front for his real source of income – hunting and killing vampires as part of an international union of vampires. According to J. J. Perry, Foxx’s character kills a vampire who happens to have been the daughter of the boss lady vampire. Immediately afterward, the two worlds collide with one man trying to save his family and a vampire now thirsty for revenge.

The movie also stars Snoop Dogg as another vampire hunter, Dave Franco as a representative from the vampire hunter’s union, Karla Souza as the vengeance-seeking vampire, Meagan Good, Liu Bordizzo, Oliver Masucci, Steve Howey, Scott Adkins, Eric Lange, and C.S. Lee. Day Shift will be available for streaming on August 12.

The following clip gives an impressive overview of what’s in store for audiences with car chases, over-the-top humor, and contortionists in the mix. Wanting to give his vampires a distinctive physicality, the filmmaker hired Cirque du Soleil contortionists to act as stunt doubles for actors.

A military veteran, Perry based Snoop Dogg’s character on his old platoon sergeant. The filmmaker said:

“Snoop looks just like my platoon sergeant from the Army, who’s no longer with us. I told Snoop when I met him, ‘Listen, I’m not hiring Snoop Dogg, I’m hiring Calvin Broadus [the actor-rapper’s real name]’ and I think that really spoke to him. Everyone hires him to be that pot-smoking West Coast guy. I put a cowboy hat on him, and I gave him the same swagger as my old platoon sergeant.”

Foxx recently produced a series on Netflix with his daughter Corrine. Dad Stop Embarrassing Me follows a bachelor who becomes a full-time father to his teenage daughter. As for Day Shift, Foxx opines that entranced viewers will mindlessly stuff their faces with popcorn as they watch.
