A new report may have unveiled the title for the upcoming remake of 2016's stellar South Korean action horror flick, Train to Busan, with the American version potentially being named Last Train to New York. The remake will be helmed by Timo Tjahjanto, with the recent report from Deadline saying, "Tjahjanto is currently attached to direct the New Line remake of Korean hit Train to Busan, which we hear could be titled Last Train to New York." While this is a rumor at present, a title such as this would certainly make sense in bringing the undead locomotive venture to the US.

Released in 2016, the original Train to Busan was directed by Yeon Sang-ho and starred Gong Yoo, Jung Yu-mi, Ma Dong-seok, Kim Su-an, Choi Woo-shik, Ahn So-hee and Kim Eui-sung. The majortiy of the story takes place on a high-speed train from Seoul to Busan as a zombie apocalypse suddenly breaks out in the country and threatens the safety of the passengers. Train to Busan became a huge hit on release, and garnered a worldwide box office total of $98.5 million, becoming the highest-grossing Korean movie in Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Singapore, as well as the highest grossing South Korean film of the year.

The zombie outing was also met with praise from both critics and audiences alike thanks to its refreshing spin on the often rather exhausted horror sub-genre, genuinely terrifying and brutally claustrophobic sequences, along with its white-knuckle pace and cast of wonderful characters, all sprinkled with a healthy dose of social commentary.

With all this in mind, it's no wonder that a remake has been put into production, with director Timo Tjahjanto, who is best known for The Night Comes for Us and V/H/S/2, hoping to create something equally as beloved. The filmmaker recently responded to early criticisms of the idea of a remake of Train to Busan, sharing some wise words from producer James Wan. "When your @ is suddenly filling up & its more about Train to Busan remake," Tjahjanto said. "In James (Wan) own words: Timo, we need to rise above & beyond everyone's expectations, just like other great remakes have done such as The Ring or Dawn of the Dead remake. Who am I to let my boss down ?"

It Chapter Two and The Nun writer Gary Dauberman is on board to pen the script for the Train to Busan remake, Last Train to New York, and has assured horror movie fans that they have found a way to approach the material that, while mixing things up for an American audience, will not encroach on the superb original. "Yes. I won't get more into that but that's one of those movies that's so f-ing great, it's so well done, you don't want to do anything that's going to be less than," Dauberman said. "I think we're certainly getting there. It feels like there's a reason to make the American version without ruining the experience of the original."

New Line Cinema, Atomic Monster and Coin Operated will be co-producing partners on the Train to Busan remake, with Warner Bros. Pictures distributing worldwide. Director Timo Tjahjanto meanwhile is keeping busy with remakes, having recently signed on to bring Steven Seagal's Under Siege back to screens. This comes to us courtesy of Deadline.
