Before the Memorial Day weekend, a cryptic video teaser revealed a special surprise would be unviled for Transformers: The Last Knight today, with the franchise's Twitter hinting that "something wicked this way comes". Some fans thought this might be an announcement that Shia LaBeouf is reprising his role as Sam Witwicky from the original trilogy, since it was recently announced that Josh Duhamel is coming back as Lennox. As it turns out, that wasn't the case, with the franchise instead revealing the return of Megatron, who gets a new look.

Both the Official Transformers Twitter and director Michael Bay's Instagram revealed Megatron's upgrade, while confirming that production is fully under way this week. Last week, the director shared the first set photos from Cuba, although it seems that principal photography won't truly happen until later this week. Unfortunately, the filmmaker wouldn't tease any details about how the villainous Megatron will be involved in the story, but he did add the following statement below.

"It's starting. This week production. Megatron is back. #transformers #decepticons#"

The Last Knight has Optimus Prime searching through the cosmos for the Quintessons, the beings believed to be responsible for the creation of the Transformers race. Meanwhile back at home, Wahlberg's Cade Yeager will be facing a new alien threat that brings Lennox (and possibly Tyrese Gibson's Epps) back into duty. Isabela Moner has signed on as the female lead, though no character details have been revealed.

The movie also has Jerrod Carmichael from NBC's The Carmichael Show as the comedic relief this time out. Shooting will take place in Detroit, with various on-location shoots planned to take place throughout the world. Michael Bay is directing from a script by Iron Man writers Art Marcum & Matt Holloway. They are joined by Black Hawk Down writer Ken Nolan on the screenplay. The team were part of Paramount's writer's room that generated several ideas for Transformers sequels and spinoffs.
