Michael Dougherty, the writer and director of the 2008 Halloween cult classic Trick 'r Treat, has signed on to co-write and direct Krampus for Legendary Pictures.

Todd Casey and Zach Shields are co-writing the script with the director, which is based on an ancient Pagan demon who punishes wicked children during the Christmas holiday season. The story is said to be told in the same style as the filmmaker's Trick 'r Treat.

Here's what Michael Dougherty had to say in a statement about the project.

"The dark ancient origins of our holidays have always fascinated me. I've been drawing twisted Christmas cards for well over a decade, so it only made sense to bring some of that morbid yuletide fun to the big screen, and Krampus was the perfect mythology to do that. Christmas has been invading Halloween for far too long. It's time to return the favor."

This project is unrelated to the recently-announced indie Anti-Claus from writer-director Kevin Smith, which is also based on the Krampus legends.

Michael Dougherty's other writing credits include X2: X-Men United and Superman Returns.
