If you were driving through Downtown Los Angeles yesterday, and suddenly felt like you'd entered an episode of HBO's hit drama series True Detective, it's because maybe you did. The three principle players in True Detective Season 2 were in the heart of the city this week, shooting new episodes for Nic Pizzolatto's acclaimed crime saga. And we have a first look at stars Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch and Rachel McAdams.

True Detective Season 2 is an all-new story not tied to the first season, and will center on crime and the occult in some of the lesser known areas of California. This time, we will follow three very different police officers and one career criminal as they become entangled in a web of conspiracy in the aftermath of a murder.

Seen here for the first time is Colin Farrell as Ray Velcoro, a compromised detective whose allegiances are torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him. Rachel McAdams is playing Ani Bezzerides, a Ventura County Sheriff's detective whose uncompromising ethics put her at odds with others and the system she serves. And Taylor Kitsch is a war veteran and motorcycle officer for the California Highway Patrol, running from a difficult past and the sudden glare of a scandal that never happened. Not seen in the new photos is Vince Vaughn, who will Frank Semyon, a career criminal in danger of losing his empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner. Take a look as filming continues this week in some of the more dark and dangerous areas of Downtown Los Angeles:
