Director, screenwriter, producer, and actor Tyler Perry is a busy filmmaker and hasn't shown signs of slowing down. He recently landed a 4-movie deal with Amazon, per The Hollywood Reporter. While he hasn't released any details on those four films or even their titles, we do know is set to produce, direct, and write all of them and that they will be released on Amazon Prime Video. Perry stated he had a warm response from the head of Amazon Studios, Jennifer Salke:
"Jennifer Salke and the entire team have welcomed me with open arms, and I’m looking forward to continuing telling unique stories and bringing my next projects to the global audiences that they reach."
Salke further explained the decision to enlist Perry, referring to him as a 'prolific creator' in this statement:
“Tyler Perry is undeniably one of the most prolific creators of our time. He is a true multihyphenate who has defined his own incredible brand of storytelling and inspired people all over the world with his series and films... We are excited to collaborate with Tyler and his teams to bring even more of his fantastic signature films to our global audiences.”
No Word on Why Tyler Perry Left Netflix
This year, Tyler Perry made A Madea Homecoming, which is the 12th installment of the Madea franchise that started in 2005 with the release of Diary of a Mad Black Woman. Also released in 2022 was Perry's A Jazzman's Blues, which he called 'a labor of love.' It's a more serious film than the Madea movies, one the director-writer said he had wanted to make for a while. Both were released this year and are available to stream on Netflix. He called Netflix "the perfect partner" in referencing the making of A Jazzman's Blues, but doesn't seem to be partnered with them anymore.
Directors, writers, and producers can leave film studios for many reasons, from wanting a higher budget, more pay, or more creative control. Sometimes, it's just over simple disagreements, and other times, directors and production companies split amicably. Neither Netflix nor Tyler Perry has commented on the departure.
Perry is also involved in stage plays, with his most recent work being in Madea's Farewell Play in 2019.
Tyler Perry's A Madea Homecoming was released on February 25, 2022, starring Perry himself, Cassi Davis-Patton, David Mann, Tamela Mann, Gabrielle Dennis, and Brendan O'Carroll. A Jazzman's Blues was released on September 23rd of the same year. The cast included Joshua Boone, Amirah Vann, Solea Pfeiffer, Austin Scott, and Ryan Eggold.
