The video game adaptation Uncharted has traversed its way to the top of the box office. The long-awaited film premiered in the United States where it's going to earn about $44.1 million for its total haul from Friday to Sunday, putting Uncharted in the top spot at the weekend's box office. It is expected to earn $52 million in North American theaters through the President's Day holiday on Monday. These numbers are better than what Sony had been expected, and it might have something to do with releasing the film in theaters only.

“This result is yet another extraordinary testament to the appetite for the theatrical experience that Sony Pictures bet on,” Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group president Josh Greenstein said in a statement, per Variety. “Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg are brilliant together.”

Ruben Fleischer directed Uncharted using a screenplay by Rafe Lee Judkins, Art Marcum, and Matt Holloway. It stars Tom Holland, Mark Wahlberg, Sophia Ali, Tati Gabrielle, and Antonio Banderas. It is based on the popular video game series of the same name and has been in the works for years, so there had been a lot of anticipation heading up to this release. The positive numbers might also mean that a follow-up film could happen.

Director Ruben Fleischer has said that he has some ideas in mind on Uncharted 2. The director also suggested that it's up to the fans to decide if they want more before Sony will order a sequel. That the movie debuted in the top spot at the box office is a good sign and will help lend itself to the possibility of more movies getting made.

“I’d be thrilled at the opportunity to make a sequel and you can’t help working on this film for two years," the director told Collider. "I can’t help but imagine different adventures these guys might find themselves on and I’d be thrilled to figure out a way to bring those to life. But ultimately the audience will decide if that’s something they’re excited to see.”

Sitting behind Uncharted at the domestic box office in the No. 2 spot is the new Channing Tatum film Dog. A buddy comedy following Tatum and his canine pal, the film opened at $15.1 million and is expected to gross $18.05 million through the holiday. Meanwhile, another Tom Holland vehicle continues to swing high at the box office with Spider-Man: No Way Home hitting the No. 3 spot. It pulled in $7.2 million for the weekend to bring its total North American haul to $771.74 million, keeping the movie in the top 5 at the box office since its December debut.

The murder mystery movie Death on the Nile cruised on down to No. 4 with a $6.3 million haul for the weekend. Rounding out the top five would be the comedy sequel Jackass Forever, which pulled in $5.2 million. With $47.7 million total hauled in so far, that film is pulling in some good profits as it was only budgeted at $10 million.
